“Vacchetta” is a very soft leather to the touch and is a typical Tuscan product, it is obtained from a cow hide and vegetable tanned. The peculiarity of this skin, in addition to the variable thickness, is the mutability. A cowhide bag changes its appearance and grows together with its owner. Vegetable tanned leather is a product of animal origin: generally it is bovine, sheep or goat leather, recycled products of the food industry, which are subjected to tanning, a process capable of stopping the decomposition, making the fibres of which the dermis of the skin is formed waterproof and rotproof.

Vegetable tanning has origins in prehistory and in Tuscany has known its maximum splendor.

For centuries the Tuscan tanners have handed down the precious artisan tradition, today a combination of ancient recipes and advanced technology; it is the most traditional and recognizable, the only one capable of give to the leather unmistakable properties, versatility of use and uniqueness of the product.

It is called "vegetable" because the substances used in tanning (the so-called "tanning agents") are tannins, natural extracts derived exclusively from vegetable sources such as chestnut and quebracho wood, gall nuts and Tara pods.

Vegetable-tanned skin absorbs traces of life. It ages but does not deteriorate. It is precisely the changes that occur with time and use that testify to the naturalness of the product. The warm shades of tannins' colors tend to surface over time. Vegetable tanned leather is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers: processing with tannins, in fact, is made without the use of toxic substances or heavy metals. Being of vegetable origin, tannins are absolutely safe even for the most sensitive skin, such as those of children. On the contrary, in predisposed subjects, chrome tanned leather could give rise to urticaria or, even, dermatitis ...
